Photographers – Here’s A Business Tip: Stop Making Excuses

Stop Making Excuses Concept
This post assumes that you are in relatively good health both mentally and physically. I'm assuming that you have the potential to actually MAKE IT HAPPEN! if you just STOP MAKING EXCUSES! and TAKE ACTION!

You may never read another blog post from me after this one. You may assume that I'm a certain way by this post when I'm really the exact opposite. For example, I have worked my butt off to be a full time photographer. It didn't just all fall in my lap as some around me may assume. I'm thankful for being able to do what I love full time.

The goal of this post is to get any photographer that is constantly having a PITY PARTY for themselves to STOP THE EXCUSES!

In case you don't know, a PITY PARTY, according to UrbanDictionary.com, is a way of experiencing grief, in which you spend your time feeling sorry for yourself and whining endlessly about how crappy your life is.

Excuse: I don't have the right Gear! If I only had the right gear, I could get things done.
Answer: Rent It, Buy Used, Borrow, Save up for it, Buy the cheap stuff off Ebay to get you going

Excuse: I don't have time to blog or do social media.
Answer: Get up 30 minutes earlier everyday, Schedule the time on your calendar

Excuse: I don't have the money to advertise my business.
Answer: Get off your butt and go to networking events (day or night), blog, be active on social media, reach out to those you know

Excuse: Editing takes up so much of my time that I cannot work on growing my business.
Answer: Use a service like RetouchUp.com if necessary and work their rates into your pricing model, use a student

Excuse: I don't know how to use a flash, a studio strobe, a certain piece of gear and I cannot afford to pay for training.
Answer: Use YouTube (It's FREE), Assist a veteran photographer, Get Amazon Kindle $9.99 per month to access digital books

Excuse: I cannot afford to have someone build me a website.
Answer: Use Wix.com, Use Weebly.com, Use Facebook, Use Flickr

Excuse: I cannot afford equipment insurance and liability insurance.
Answer: As cheap as this type of insurance is, you have to make this one happen or just close up shop now.

Excuse: I don't have a studio, so I cannot do XYZ.
Answer: Do the best you can without a studio. It adds overhead and you don't make money until the monthly overhead is met.

I love making excuses because it's easier than making things happen. Woe is me.
