Selfie sticks and phone photography in general are wildly popular these days. With the ease of cell phone photography and video, the popularity is likely not going away anytime soon. However, there is still a need of professional photography especially in the corporate, business and commercial world that I shoot in.
Both of the images above were shot within seconds of each other in the same location. The one of the left was with an iPhone 5 on a selfie stick in available light and the one on the right was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III with a 70-200mm F/2.8 with two Paul C. Buff Einstein strobes as the lighting sources.
OK, yes, you can say the one on the right was shot with thousands of dollars worth of gear. Although that's true, the subject doesn't have to buy the gear. The subject simply needs to hire a pro that has the gear and the knowledge to use it.
YOUR PERSONAL BRAND IS AT STAKE
This young woman is a successful sales professional that owns a SIX FIGURE SALES Coaching and Consulting business. Would you take her serious and want to hire her based on the poor quality selfie image or would you expect someone like her to value her personal brand enough to have professional images to represent her brand? The answer seems obvious, but that's not the case with everyone: People still use poor quality images (especially on LinkedIn).
I had someone contact me about a studio headshot which is the most affordable people photography that I offer. Any images purchased include the post production editing. Yet, this particular individual actually told me that he had decided not to use me because his wife took a nice shot of him with a phone camera.
I'm sorry, but I've seen plenty of phone headshots against a beige wall, in poor lighting that are not the same as my studio shots with post editing. If someone cannot tell the difference or doesn't care enough about their personal brand, then who am I to try and convince them otherwise?
Selfie sticks are fun for on the go, groups of people, chilling at the beach, by the pool or hanging with friends and family which are all great for Facebook posting. However, at the end of the day, when it comes to a professional image and your personal brand (especially on LinkedIn), it's time to up your game and hire a professional. In studio, edited headshots, are less than $200 throughout the Raleigh market. That's a small price to pay for professional results and your reputation as a professional.
