Funny Side Note: I originally wrote this blog post many weeks ago and never published it. Well, it’s a few weeks after I wrote it, but here you go:

It’s tempting and also very natural (at least for me) to have a desire to own the latest pro-dslr on the market. However, after doing a little research, I’m not convinced that upgrading to the Canon 5Ds or 5Dsr is the right move for me.

I currently shoot with the Canon 5D MarkIII which is an amazing camera. The 5Ds and 5Dsr are modeled after the 5D MarkIII in body style. However, the 5Ds and 5Dsr are likely not the best move for my professional shooting needs.

The 5Ds and 5Dsr are 50.6 megapixels which is both impressive and potential overkill (pending your shooting needs) at the same time. In my case, I do a lot of individual portrait work in studio and on location for companies, but the majority of what I shoot is used on the web via company websites, social media and the like. Yes, some of that I shoot is used in print, but rarely used in billboard size. However, I have shot billboard images, tradeshow work, etc. and have never had a complaint about the resolution. In addition, I shoot a LOT of low light corporate event work. It seems that the 5Ds and 5Dsr are not as much about low light performance as they are about CRAZY high resolution with a 50.6 MP sensor. Anytime you are considering a new camera or an upgrade to your current system, you should really learn about the new camera and decide if it will really make a difference in what you are already shooting on a regular basis.
