Although I mention High Speed Sync below, it is NOT always necessary. I shot this with a studio strobe that does not have a High Speed Sync option. High speed sync is nice when you don’t want to worry about sync speeds conflicting with your shot.

This is how you do it and it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…………….

1…Expose for the OUTSIDE not the inside…
The problem with exposing for the outside is that you may need High Speed Sync to pull the shot off if the outside exposure based on your ISO and F/stop settings exceeds your camera sync speed. Hint: Start with the ISO at 100 then change as needed.

2…Set the Camera on AV mode…
When the camera is on AV mode, you can choose your F/stop and the camera sets the shutter speed. That’s why High Speed Sync as previously mentioned may be important. You don’t want to have to worry about sync.

3…The inside light balances with the outside light…
The trick is to get 1 and 2 above all set then make sure the inside light you are using whether speedlite or strobe then balances out the subject with the setting you have in place for the outside. For example, if your settings are 100ISO @F/5.6 @1/125th, you simply have to make sure the inside light fills in the subject. TTL and High Speed Sync (if needed) makes it a little faster, but if a studio strobe will work, it’s just a matter of adjusting the power until the subject looks exposed properly.

I’ve have done my fair share of attorney headshots in front of bookcases which are perfectly fine and look professional. However, this shoot in Downtown Raleigh of an individual lawyer gave me some room to be creative.

The largest shot on the left was shot in the big conference room. I made sure that the outside building was noticeable but out of focus. Exposing for the outside and filling in with studio strobes on the inside helped achieve this look.

The second and third shot were taken in the same general area only a few feet from each other. I purposely made the right side of the face brighter with a second strobe in the image in the upper right. On the image in the lower right, I thought a very casual shot with his law firm coffee cup would look nice.

I’ve done so many in studio classic headshots that sometimes people put me in this little box of that’s all I do. The reality of it is that I can do all types of people photography and can cater to the client needs provided it’s not overly artsy and more about the art style than the subject. I want the subject to shine through in my photography whether it’s a classic attorney headshot in front of a bookcase or something more creative, yet professional, of an attorney being more casual.

Do the best you can with the equipment that you own or have access to. A prime lens will likel yield better results than a kit lens. But other than that, most of the rest of this can be shot with alternative options to what I used above. No, you don’t have to shoot it with a FULL Frame Pro Body. No, you don’t have to have an Einstein Strobe.  etc. etc.
